STAGE 1 EXERCISES
Exercise 3 Generic GroupsNote that in Documents 3 and 4, the king addresses a host of unnamed men holding specific offices. The function of generic groups such as ‘bishops’, ‘sheriffs’, ‘justiciars’ in these charters is clearly not the same as that of unnamed but specific individuals (such as ‘the priest in whose house’, ‘the bishop of London’). The unnamed sheriffs and bishops will add nothing to our study of the people associated with Colne Priory, so there is no need to mark these groups for inclusion in the Index. Their occurrence, with specific reference to London and Middlesex, will, of course, be relevant to subsequent interpretation of the data from the document.
